International Accreditation of Counseling Services recognizes Ithaca College.

Ithaca College’s Center for Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) has been accredited by the International Accreditation of Counseling Services (IACS), the premier leader in setting the benchmark for the full range of professional counseling services on college and university campuses.

CAPS was evaluated by IACS and was found to offer “competent and reliable professional services to its clientele.” Approval by IACS is also dependent upon evidence on continuing professional development as well as demonstration of excellence of counseling performance.

“It is important for the IC community to know that all CAPS counselors are committed to providing best practices in mental health care, within our scope of practice, and that we are committed to serving the entire community through our spectrum of counseling services and through partnering with other student service offices, and faculty/staff, on campus-wide initiatives such as JED Campus.”

Brian Petersen, director of the Center for Counseling, Health and Wellness

“CAPS is proud to maintain the high standards of our care for IC students and the IACS accreditation is a continuing recognition of this effort,” said Brian Petersen, director of the Center for Counseling, Health and Wellness.  “It is important for the IC community to know that all CAPS counselors are committed to providing best practices in mental health care, within our scope of practice, and that we are committed to serving the entire community through our spectrum of counseling services and through partnering with other student service offices, and faculty/staff, on campus-wide initiatives such as JED Campus”.

IC joined JED Campus, a nationwide initiative of The Jed Foundation (JED) in 2020. The Jed Foundation is a nonprofit organization that partners with colleges to strengthen their mental health, substance misuse, and suicide prevention programs and systems.

Ithaca College CAPS houses a team of licensed and license-eligible professionals who promote and foster mental health, emotional well-being, and a sense of belonging among students. Their goal is to work collaboratively with students to address the issues and experiences that are important to them. CAPS offers free, confidential resources based upon a model and philosophy of care called Stepped Care 2.0, a multifaceted approach that values a variety of services.

Through a comprehensive peer review process, IACS confirms the highest standards are being met, validates professional excellence, and distinguishes standout counseling centers with its accreditation seal of approval. Continuing a legacy that dates back to 1949, IACS is committed to advancing quality worldwide, encouraging and working with all centers seeking accreditation.

CAPS-Let's Talk Fall 2022

In the past, “Let’s Talk” had been a drop-in service that offered informal, confidential consultations with a CAPS counselor at various locations around campus.  Since fall 2020, Let’s Talk has been virtual.  This will continue during fall 2022!  Let’s Talk is a free service where Ithaca College students can check in via telehealth for an informal and confidential consultation with a CAPS counselor.  The brief consultations will be available by phone or by Zoom.  Let’s Talk for the fall semester will start the week of August 15 and will continue through finals week.
