  • Read the Traveler’s Checklist and the Smart Traveler Tips. Find out how to plan a safe trip, what documents you need, how to handle money overseas, and more.

  • Stay connected. Follow the TravelGov Facebook and Twitter accounts to get safety and security information, especially during a crisis overseas.

  • Sign up for security updates through the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (

  • Always carry the address and phone number of the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate, in English and the local language.

  • Program important numbers (e.g., the nearest embassy or consulate, insurance contact information, and emergency contacts) into your cell phone before departing the States, using the correct dialing format for the country/countries you will be visiting. (Visit to view a worldwide list of country codes. This website also offers instructions on how to dial from/to your country of choice.)

  • Agree on regular times to check in with your emergency contacts.
