Course:   Introduction to Journalism  JOUR 11100

Professor:  Mead Loop, Professor of Journalism

Attributes and Designations:  Liberal Arts (LA), CCCS

When do students enroll:  First class, first semester

What it covers:
Students do their first video standup on the first day in the course: They recite from memory The First Amendment to the Constitution. Students practice the craft of journalism, including reporting this year's Cortaca Jug football game on deadline and in person at Yankee Stadium. Students learn foundational concepts:  Associated Press style; inverted pyramid writing on deadline; and long-form investigative writing.

How it is taught:
This foundational survey course covers topics such as objectivity, libel, journalism history and Associated Press style through lectures. Then we transition to deadline reporting and news writing through application with the professor serving as editor and students as reporters.

Why I teach this course:

I love introducing first-year students to reporting immediately, as noted in this story, "Making the City a Classroom."
