SKILLS AND TOPICS COVERED IN PFSM 17100 AND 17200

Keyboard Musicianship I (PFSM 17100) and Keyboard Musicianship II (PFSM 17200) are required for all music majors EXCEPT piano and organ majors.

SKILLS AND TOPICS COVERED IN KEYBOARD MUSICIANSHIP I (PFSM 17100):

  1. Perform all major scales, 2 octaves, traditional fingering, hands together, in eighth notes, quarter = 72 
  2. Perform major arpeggios, 2 octaves, traditional fingering, hands alone, in eighth notes, quarter = 72 
  3. Sight read an elementary-level piano solo
  4. Harmonize familiar/folk tunes using I, IV, and V7 
  5. Perform a short piano piece, of the repertoire equivalent to Beethoven German Dance, or Kabalevsky Scherzo 

SKILLS AND TOPICS COVERED IN KEYBOARD MUSICIANSHIP II (PFSM 17200):

  1. Perform all harmonic minor scales, 2 octaves, traditional fingering, hands together, in eighth notes, quarter = 72 
  2. Perform minor arpeggios, 2 octaves, traditional fingering, hands alone, in eighth notes, quarter = 72 
  3. Sight read an elementary-level piano solo
  4. Harmonize familiar/folk tunes using diatonic triads, seventh chords, and secondary dominants
  5. Perform a short piano piece, Late Elementary or Early Intermediate level.

PROCESS FOR EXEMPTING PFSM 17100 AND/OR 17200

PROCESS:

  1. Create an unlisted YouTube link and send the link to musicassocdean@ithaca.edu no later than Tuesday, August 1, 2023. A piano professor will review it, and determine whether further review is needed. 

  2. PFSM 17200 may not be exempted without also exempting PFSM 17100.

  3. Separate videos must be submitted for each course.

VIDEO REQUIREMENTS FOR KEYBOARD MUSICIANSHIP I (PFSM 17100):

Create a video recording which includes the following: 

1. Two major scales chosen from C, G, D, A, and E; two major scales chosen from F, B, Gb, or Db; and one major scale chosen from Bb, Eb, or Ab.  All scales should be performed hands together, two octaves ascending and descending with standard scale fingering.

2. One major arpeggio chosen from C, F, G; one major arpeggio chosen from D, E, A, or B; and one major arpeggio chosen from Db, Eb, or Bb.  All arpeggios should be performed with both hands, one hand at a time, two octaves ascending and descending, with standard arpeggio fingering.

3. A short solo representing your level.

The recording should be continuous without multiple cuts. Students are expected to demonstrate fluency.

VIDEO REQUIREMENTS FOR KEYBOARD MUSICIANSHIP II (PFSM 17200): 

If you are currently enrolled in PFSM 17100 Keyboard Musicianship I, please contact your professor for a placement exam.

If you are not currently enrolled in PFSM 17100, create a video recording which includes the following: 

1. One harmonic minor scale chosen from C, G, D, A, and E; one harmonic minor scale chosen from F, B, Eb, or Bb; one harmonic minor scale chosen from C#, F#, or G#. 

  • All three scales should be performed hands together, two octaves ascending and descending with standard scale fingering.

2. One minor arpeggio chosen from D, A, E; one minor arpeggio chosen from C, F, G; one minor arpeggio chosen from C#, F#, or G#

3. A short solo representing your level.
