|Professional Excellence Award in Public and COmmunity Health - Program Emphasis|
Growing up in Pennsylvania, I actively participated in competitive swimming and recreational leisure activities such as snowboarding with my family. Choosing Ithaca College wasn’t difficult, knowing that Ithaca offered numerous and diverse opportunities for me to excel in. I began my journey at Ithaca undecided; however through the encouragement of HSHP faculty, I decided to pursue an education in Public Health. I specifically was drawn to the importance of promoting preventive work and healthy behaviors, as well as raising awareness of the many health concerns this world faces. After graduation, my plans are to strive for a higher degree of education, and pursue a career in advocacy and educational programming. By maintaining my positive outlook on life, I’m confident that I have only just begun to experience the satisfaction that comes with a public health career.
Some of my most memorable experiences involved activities with my close friends and my involvement with extracurricular community service activities. The Alternative Spring Break trip I took to Salamanca, New York was one of the most personally rewarding and enlightening experiences I have had the pleasure of participating in. During the trip, I was able to work with, play, and be a mentor for underprivileged children that attended the local youth center. As I was also taking a course at that time, which focused on racial and ethnic disparities in health, it was a tremendous opportunity for me to directly witness the concepts we discussed in class. I will never forget the hardships these children experience on a daily basis, and I am appreciative for having had the opportunity to be a positive influence in their lives.
