Barbara C. Johnson

Contributed by Andrejs Ozolins on 01/27/03

Barbara C. Johnson, anthropology, has been awarded an NEH fellowship to work on a book manuscript. Tentatively titled "They Carry Their Notebooks with Them: Cochin Jewish Women and their Songs," the work portrays the culture of Cochin Jewish women in South India and Israel, offering a descriptive analysis of their traditional vernacular folk songs. Cochin, sometimes referred to as the "Venice of the East," is one the three largest ports on India's west coast. Johnson is currently on sabbatic leave.
