Every year, the School of Humanities and Sciences invites proposals for the Fred L. Emerson Humanities Collaboration Award; this fall, the review committee made two awards to senior English majors to work with professors on scholarly projects.

Christa Calkins '09 will be working with Anjali Nerlekar, assistant professor of English, during the spring semester on a project entitled “Departures and Returns: Anglophone Caribbean Literature.” Christa will research and build an annotated bibliography on literature written by authors of the African diaspora in order both to support Prof. Nerlekar’s efforts to develop a graduate level course on the topic, and also to prepare for her senior thesis on postcolonial literature.

Fiana Muhlberger '09 will be working with Elizabeth Bleicher, assistant professor of English, during the spring semester on a project entitled “The Way We Live (Right) Now: Trollope’s Redemption of the Ruined Man.” Fiana will research and build an annotated bibliography of resources on Victorian conduct manuals that will contribute to Prof. Bleicher’s article for publication.

The Emerson Collaboration awards are granted to meritorious H&S students who are eligible for financial aid to collaborate directly with a member of the Humanities faculty on a scholarly project. The Award offers a stipend of up to $3,000 in the summer and $1,500 during the semester to enable student recipients to devote time and attention to the work required to succeed in such scholarly projects.

Proposals for projects that will take place during summer 2009 or the fall 2009 semester will be invited in spring 2009. Please direct any questions about this program to Stacia Zabusky, Assistant Dean of H&S, 274-3102, More information on the Emerson Humanities Collaboration Award application process can be found at
