Volunteer and Connect

Community Plunge is a great opportunity for first-year students to volunteer and connect with the Ithaca Community before the academic year begins. Participants are placed in teams and spend Friday and Saturday working with a variety of local service organizations around Ithaca.

Students can participate in a variety of projects that range from construction to tutoring. Past participants have built nature trails that are wheelchair accessible, painted at local agencies, assisted with summer camp programs, and prepared lunch for residents living in senior citizen facilities.

Plunge participants have the chance to:

  • Explore the Ithaca community
  • Build relationships with other first-year students
  • Develop teamwork skills
  • Have fun!

"Community Plunge exemplifies everything I would ever want to do: Give myself entirely and be able to know I've helped people by the end of the day. It's the greatest feeling, and I know it helps others."

Community Plunge participants volunteer in the Ithaca area, helping local non-profits meet their goals while making new friends along the way! Sites might include sorting books for the Friends of the Library book sale, playground construction at Stewart Park, or a Habitat for Humanity building project.

Note: Community Plunge volunteers will engage in a range of activities, including, but not limited to, working outside, cleaning, working with children, and some moderate lifting.  If you have any concerns regarding your involvement in Community Plunge, be sure to indicate that in your participation confirmation.
