Jessica Small is an active teacher and performer whose musical ventures have reinforced her passions for collaboration and community service. Her interest in chamber music encouraged the founding of the DubSax Quartet, for which she helped organize educational outreach tours throughout Eastern North Carolina, San Antonio, and Austin, Texas. As a performer, Small has given various solo and quartet performances at NASA Conferences and the International Conference for Saxophone Pedagogy and Performance. Small is currently serving as a music teacher for Detroit Public Schools. There she loves creating engaging and relevant lessons for her underserved community and collaborating with the Sphinx Organization to provide additional musical experiences. She holds degrees in Music Education and Saxophone Performance from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and Ithaca College, respectively. While at UNCW, Jessica won the Richard R. Deas Collegiate Concerto Competition and was a finalist in the Rosen-Schaffel Competition at Appalachian State University. She has since performed with the top ensembles at each university, including Ithaca College’s Wind Ensemble as they performed the 50th anniversary of Karel Husa’s Music for Prague at Lincoln Center in 2019. Her primary teachers include Frank Bongiorno, Steven Mauk, and Jonathan Helton.
