Public Sociology: Knowledge for What and for Whom?

Sociology, more broadly and persistently than any other social science, focuses on the processes that generate, maintain, and challenge social inequalities.

The Sociology Department at Ithaca College is committed to the idea that sociology can and should play a role in creating a world where all people have the opportunity to thrive. We believe that a sociological perspective is crucial for an informed understanding of issues and events at home and across the globe.

For these reasons, we emphasise the importance of “public sociology”: sociological inquiry which promotes and informs public debate about pressing social issues. Throughout our curriculum students will find this commitment reflected in courses, assignments, internship opportunities, and beyond.
