Percussion (Classical) Audition Requirements

Statement from Ithaca College

Equity is a priority for Ithaca College. We understand that students do not all have access to instruments outside of your home. Admission decisions will not be impacted by your access to instruments. Please communicate with us if you have any issues regarding access to instruments and we will come up with a personalized audition format to fit your current needs.

Your Audition for IC

For the 2020-2021 audition season, percussion applicants will submit the following materials as part of their audition process.

The audition requirements for your video-recorded audition are included below.

Note: If you do not have access to a mallet instrument or snare drum/practice pad, please let us know and we can find an alternative that fits your current logistical situation. We will not make admission decisions based on your access to instruments, but we do need advance communication to help with brainstorming creative ways of hearing you.

Additionally, due to many applicants’ lack of access to timpani, we are making the performance/recording of timpani optional. Ithaca College will not make admission decisions based upon a student’s access to instruments. However, please let us know if you are making substitutions so we can be aware and help get the best possible result for you.

Meet and Greet with Conrad Alexander and Mike Truesdell
Say hi, meet Conrad Alexander and Mike Truesdell. We would love to get to talk with you, learn about your interests and hear how you spent your time learning remotely!

Sight-Reading
30 minutes before your meeting time, we will send you two short excerpts, one on mallets and one on snare drum. Please think about how you will set yourself up to read this PDF well. You might want to print it off, or arrange your computer/tablet to see well. It will probably be too small to be read off of your phone. If you do not have access to a mallet instrument, please write to Mike at mtruesdell@ithaca.edu and we will work together to come up with a creative way to hear your sight reading abilities.

Q & A
During the Zoom session, we will have a chance to talk with you and get to meet you in person. We are very excited about this! You will also have a chance to ask us any questions you might have about the IC Percussion Department, curriculum, ensembles or anything that comes to mind.

Best Practices for Recording

We have assembled a series of "best practices" to assist you in making the best quality recording possible using the equipment at your disposal. Please let us know if you have other questions about how to best prepare recordings - we would be glad to do what we can to help!

Advice from Dr. Truesdell

When choosing repertoire for your IC audition, it is important to choose pieces that demonstrate the best of your ability right now. Please try to choose your repertoire wisely, work on it for a few months and perform it for your family and friends many times before you record.

We would rather not hear something you’ve been working on for more than one year, or less than a few weeks - we want to hear your best ability right now

I have given suggestions above for possible composers and pieces, but that is by no means fixed. If you have another piece that demonstrates your ability accurately and you are passionate about, we would like to hear that piece. If you are concerned or are questioning your repertoire choice, please email me at mtruesdell@ithaca.edu.

We look forward to hearing you!

- Mike T.
