2. Summer Classes and Work Schedules

International students are eligible to take summer classes and work on campus at the same time. Here are some details to keep in mind:

  • Review the Academic Calendar and become familiar with the summer session dates.
  • Summer employment begins the day after commencement (Monday, May 18, 2026) and ends the day before classes start for the Fall Term (August 24, 2026).
  • Students enrolled in a summer course are limited to 20 hours of work per week during that session. Students not enrolled in classes may work up to 40 hours per week, depending on their visa type and rules.
    • Example 1: If you are enrolled in a Summer Session I course (May 26 – July 3), you may not work more than 20 hours per week. Beginning July 4, if you are not enrolled in Summer Session II (July 6 – August 12), you may work up to 40 hours per week.
    • Example 2: If you are enrolled in a Summer Session II course (July 6 – August 12), you are limited to 20 hours per week for the duration of that session.

Important Employment Requirements

Before starting a campus job, international students must:

Housing Included as Compensation

Some campus jobs may provide free or reduced on-campus housing during the summer, depending on the position. However, please note that these are few and far between. Read job descriptions carefully to see if housing is included as part of compensation. Reach out directly to the hiring manager to ask for clarification if you have doubts.

Information on summer housing pricing can be found on the summer housing website. It is advised that students budget appropriately if they plan to live on-campus over the summer. Please note that residential life often hires summer employment opportunities with housing included however, free housing is never guaranteed.

5. Employment Rules for International Students (F-1 Visa)

On-Campus Employment

International students with F-1 status may work on campus without additional immigration authorization.

Employment policies are as follows:

  • Students may work up to 20 hours per week while classes are in session
  • Students may work up to 40 hours per week during school breaks or vacation periods
  • Work must be on campus unless special authorization is granted
  • Students must intend to enroll full-time for the Fall semester

Working more hours than allowed or working off-campus without authorization can violate visa status.

6. Off-Campus Employment

Off-campus work is not automatically allowed for international students.

Students must receive authorization before starting any off-campus job.

Students generally must complete one full academic year before qualifying for most off-campus work authorization.
