An internal promotion may occur when the number of eligible students is equal to or fewer than the number of available student manager positions.
Process for Promoting Student Employees to Student Manager Roles
1. Internal Promotion (Direct Promotion)
Eligibility Requirements
Students must meet the established requirements for the role. For example, a department may require that a student has worked in Dining Services for at least two semesters before being considered for a manager position.
When Internal Promotion Is Allowed
Internal promotion can occur when:
- One eligible student and one open position
- Two eligible students and two open positions
- Three eligible students and three open positions
- Any situation where the number of qualified students matches the number of available positions
In these cases, supervisors may directly promote the eligible student(s) without posting the position.
Steps
- Confirm the student(s) meet all eligibility requirements.
- Submit the promotion through the student employment hiring system.
- Coordinate with Student Employment to process the promotion.
2. Competitive Promotion Process (Posting Required)
If the number of eligible students exceeds the number of available positions, the role must be posted and a competitive selection process must be used.
Example Scenario
- Two students meet the eligibility requirements.
- Only one student manager position is available.
In this situation, the department must create and post a Student Manager position.
Posting Requirement
- The position must be posted on the Student Employment website.
- The posting must remain open for a minimum of two business days.
- All eligible students must have the opportunity to apply and be considered.
Selection Process
- Create and submit the Student Manager job requisition.
- The position is posted on the Student Employment website for two business days.
- Eligible students submit applications.
- The supervisor reviews applications and selects the candidate.
