Release Notes

Details of the latest features and updates our developers have added to improve the IC website. The most recent release info is listed first.

Standard Release v2.35 (April 28, 2021)

A quick update to revert some changes that were preventing some pages from saving edits. Being able to save edits is generally a good thing.

Standard Release v2.34 (April 27, 2021)

This one's for you, content managers! This release deploys a new compact view for anyone editing web content. Now when you click to the edit view for a page, all paragraphs will be collapsed until you edit them, which is especially helpful for long landing pages with a lot of paragraphs to keep track of. Buttons and edit controls are more intuitive and easier to see and it even works a little faster than before.

We've also updated some custom code and fixed automated testing, and we squished some bugs for page titles that weren't displaying correctly and URLs that were being rudely truncated.

Standard Release v2.33 (April 22, 2021)

Nothing but backend updates this time, including some new automated tests, some developer software updates, and a Drupal security update to keep us all safe.

Standard Release v2.32 (April 15, 2021)

Work continues on our Drupal beta of Intercom, and this update adds search functionality. We also continued some spring cleaning efforts, removing a module that was no longer in use and fixing som errors that were filling up our site log. Things feel a little more tidy now.

Standard Release v2.31 (April 7, 2021)

Fixed the way results are displayed on the major finder search page so they retain a logical alphabetical order when search relevance does not apply. We've also updated our Drupal beta of Intercom to provide navigation and better breadcrumbs as we continue testing.

Standard Release v2.30 (March 31, 2021)

A small fix to revert an overzealous change in the new major finder search tool. Degree types are displaying again where they should.

Standard Release v2.29 (March 25, 2021)

We're excited to share a soft launch of our new prototype "Find Your Path" explorer tool for searching and filtering academic programs. This beta launch will be in testing into early summer of 2021 so there are plenty of improvements yet to come, but we're excited to finally be able to share this important new feature for additional feedback and iteration.  Check it out at

Standard Release v2.28 (March 18, 2021)

Fixes a bug that was affecting content in Featured Cards, and finishes the cleanup of cache memory usage issues started in the previous release. Also improved some code style checks while we were in there. Style matters.

Standard Release v2.27 (March 17, 2021)

This release includes updates to developer documentation and design components. It also includes the first part of an improvement to menu item formatting to reduce cache memory usage, and fixes some spacing inconsistencies.

Standard Release v2.26 (March 15, 2021)

This release includes performance improvements and developer documentation updates.

New Spotify Embeds – You can now use an embed code from Spotify in the "Add Embed" feature to embed a single song or podcast episode, or an entire playlist.

Standard Release v2.25 (March 4, 2021)

Fixes "access denied" errors for authenticated users logged into Drupal because that was really annoying. We updated our visual regression testing as well to hopefully catch future problems before they happen.

Standard Release v2.24 (February 25, 2021)

This release contains minor backend updates and the following improvements:

  • Adds additional fields to the new COVID Color Banner feature for content managers to update the content more easily.
  • Updates the Quick Links and Social Links sub-navigation blocks so that they will show correctly on Blog pages.
  • Makes headings a required field for contact and content callouts.
  • Adds a media carousel component for planned implementation.

Standard Release v2.23 (February 18, 2021)

This release includes the usual backend bug fixes and workflow improvements to make things run smoother. But the star of this release is the new COVID Color Banner feature, which allows a special color-code status to be displayed on a landing page, plus a key explaining the meaning of each color status. Designed on a rapid turnaround by our awesome front-end designer and developer, you can see this new feature in action on the IC COVID Dashboard site.

Standard Release v2.22 (February 4, 2021)

This release improves our release process and cleans out unneeded code. Modules that no longer spark joy have been removed.

Standard Release v2.21 (January 28, 2021)

We took our time on this one so there's a lot more in here. A good chunk of this is adjustments, bug fixes, and updates for our backend workflow, including the Drupal v8.9.13 update.

We're also excited to enable paragraph-level publish controls, allowing content managers to mark individual paragraphs as unpublished so they disappear when they're not needed, rather than deleting or editing entire pages.

Standard Release v2.20 (January 7, 2021)

Creates a new view for Admin users to view and manage all taxonomy terms created in the system. We've also simplified some permissions to reduce slow queries.

Standard Release v2.19 (January 5, 2020)

A new release to kick off a new year. This unpublished old profiles that were migrated but no longer valid. Also includes minor performance updates so pages load faster.

Standard Release v2.18 (December 24, 2020)

Even during a holiday break, 2020 wasn't done breaking things yet. Bugs happen. This release fixes an issue that was causing gateway timeout errors. We can all go back to our eggnog now.

Standard Release v2.17 (December 22, 2020)

Lots of smaller details in one release, including new front end components and several backend improvements for testing and running migration import for Intercom content using feeds.

Standard Release v2.16 (December 14, 2020)

Allows the Featured News card to be added to Topics and Academic Department pages. Also fixes some login functions for Profiles and other minor backend bugs.

Standard Release v2.15 (December 10, 2020)

Assigns the correct URL path to Profiles when they are created in the migration process.

Standard Release v2.14 (December 7, 2020)

Updates how Profile content migrates from the old WPM system over to Drupal to ensure published items remain published. Also made it easier for administrators to search for and view lists of profiles within admin views.

Standard Release v2.13 (December 3, 2020)

Provides more design and feature updates needed to migrate ICView content out of the old website and into Drupal.

Standard Release v2.12 (December 2, 2020)

This release adds additional design elements for ICView content migration, and installs the security patch update to Drupal v8.9.10.

Standard Release v2.11 (November 24, 2020)

They say sometimes you don't miss something until it's gone, like when the profile info header disappeared on Media Gallery or Category pages if they were subpages of a profile. We did miss it, so we put that profile info header back and things look right again. While we were in there, we also added a new content type and filter block needed for ICView content migration, plus some more features for the new major finder tool. We'll be adding to those soon.

Standard Release v2.10 (November 18, 2020)

Fixes a minor bug in the developer workflow, and installs critical Drupal core update v8.9.9 following the previous update.

Standard Release v2.9 (November 18, 2020)

This release provides more design updates for the new "find your path" program search filter we're developing, and elements needed for the upcoming migration of Intercom. We've also fixed some display bugs on Category pages and enabled the Media Gallery feature for Profiles.

Under the hood, we've updated some of the automated testing, improved the admin view of some control menus, and updated the system to Drupal v8.9.8.

Standard Release v2.8 (November 9, 2020)

By popular demand, you can now include a Media Gallery within a Topic instead of a Site if that meets your needs. We're also making adjustments to the new Profile page designs we're testing for faculty and staff - stay tuned for more details on that major release!

Standard Release v2.7 (November 4, 2020)

We cleaned up the spacing between some adjacent paragraphs of the same type. Added a nice lock icon to indicate protected content. Improved some views for Drupal administrators. Made background images more responsive for different screen sizes. Fixed a bug with Social Links on Sites to accept additional varieties of YouTube links.

New Feature

  • Icon Cards can be added to a Site or Topic landing page to direct users to specific key information with a visual cue using a standard set of icons to represent popular content categories. Cards can be added using any of the icons currently in the system; additional icons can be added for use by request. (Example)

Standard Release v2.6 (October 23, 2020)

Adds an important step for auto-generating the correct alias for new sites migrating from WPM. Also upgrades our use of Emusify to version 2.0.

Standard Release v2.5 (October 20, 2020)

This release addresses some backend process updates and minor bugs that were preventing Embeded content from being edited, which wasn't helping anyone. We also stopped the duplication of menus when migrating sites or profiles into Drupal from WPM.

Standard Release v2.4 (October 15, 2020)

Media galleries and certain gallery contents were not aligning or displaying correctly. We fixed that.

Standard Release v2.3 (October 13, 2020)

There's an assortment of updates to the core Drupal elements in this release, as well as a fix for user authentication from the previous release. We also added a new CMS Admin role to better serve our CMS administrators and fixed some missing view elements for those users.

New Feature

  • Menu Logo is a new an option for adding a logo to the bottom of a Site navigation menu. The logo image can be used to link out to the website of a professional organization affiliation related to that site. CMS Authors can add a menu logo from the Secondary Content section of the editor view.

Standard Release v2.2 (October 12, 2020)

Updated options for embedding a Kaltura livestream feed for campus events, and switches user login to new SimpleSAML path for authentication.

Standard Release v2.1 (October 7, 2020)

Fixes some details required for Profile content migration to function as planned.

Standard Release v2.0 (October 5, 2020)

Our CMS Version Two is here! We had enough small improvements lined up for improving the CMS editorial interface that we decided to bundle them all into an extra special update worthy of being named our 2.0 version. This includes:

  • Adminimal toolbar theme, which brings a cleaner, more condensed design to the primary navigation menus and controls used by content editors and CMS administrators.
  • Responsive Preview allows any logged in user to view their web page as it appears on various phones and tablets. The simple tool offers a dropdown selector of some of the most popular devices, and then displays a virtual screen for that device that can be rotated vertically and horizontally to see how content layout changes.
  • Coffee is a special shortcut, rapid search module designed for power users who manage a lot of content and need to get to things quickly. Click the "Go to" button in the main CMS menu or type Alt+D to activate the search bar, then start typing the page or content your looking for.

All together, these changes refine the design and functionality available to our content editors in valuable ways and we're excited to finally make them available to all our CMS users.

Standard Release v1.96 (October 4, 2020)

Fixes an error in our migration process and updates some of our automated testing. Lets our web developers work better but nothing you'll notice on the website itself.

Standard Release v1.95 (September 30, 2020)

This release includes backend updates for developers, and some performance enhancements that help content load faster. We've also addressed a bug with user authentication that was creating "website encountered an unexpected error" messages after logging into Drupal.

Feature Update

We've added the ability to link to individual Collapsible Content paragraphs on a page such as in an FAQ. Click on the title and you'll get a unique # code appended to the URL of your page, and that link can be shared to direct users directly to that item on the page:

Collapsible Content Demo

Tap on the science trivia questions below. Each question has a unique URL that can be copied, linked to, or shared.

The Milky Way Galaxy is about 125,000 light years wide.

If our entire solar system were shrunk to the size of a quarter, the Milky Way Galaxy would be the size of the continental United States.

Light travels about 984 million feet (300 million meters) in one second.

If you had a rope of that length, it would be long enough to wrap around the Earth 40,000 times.

97.5% of the world's water is salinated. Of the 2.5% that's fresh, over 99% is trapped in glaciers and snowfields, so only .007% of the water on the globe is actually drinkable by humans and animals.

Imagine a gallon jug filled with water, and one square inch ice cube next to it. All of the water in the jug is salt water. The ice cube is the only freshwater, and humans can only drink what's melting off of it.

Supplemental Release v1.94.1 (September 28, 2020)

This is a minor update to fix Profile content so that the Header will display "Faculty" or "Staff" as appropriate for the content type selected, instead of displaying the page title.

Standard Release v1.94 (September 24, 2020)

This release is chock full of minor functional improvements and bug fixes, as well as the usual module updates and additional features for the Profile content type.

Standard Release v1.93 (September 18, 2020)

This release updates our system to Drupal Core 8.9.6. This also modifies the paragraph options available for Profile content types, patches the user switching interface, and updates documentation in our Storybook design component system.

Standard Release v1.92 (September 10, 2020)

This release fixes some bugs that were slowing down the code build process, and provides a significant upgrade to our user experience with a new responsive solution for tables.

Responsive Tables

Pages with Tables in them were causing problems for users on smaller screens of tablets or phones. They didn't resize to small screens correctly, shifting rows and columns into confusing blocks of content. With this release, Tables now maintain their minimum width no matter the screen size. Check out the example below on your phone to see the difference.

Standard Release v1.91 (September 4, 2020)

Creates a new Stat Card Editor role so that more than one person can help keep data up to date on critical web pages.

Standard Release v1.90 (September 3, 2020)

Did you notice how occasionally sub-menu items would appear on the primary navigation bar seemingly at random? We finally found a way to make that stop. At least, we think we did. ? This release also contains additional bug fixes and design improvements.

Standard Release v1.89 (August 27, 2020)

This is full of the usual backend process improvements and bug fixes that help keep things running smoothly. We've also made images optional when creating category items, and added a test version of media cards for CMS Manager users to try out.

Standard Release v1.88 (August 14, 2020)

Updates system to Drupal Core 8.9.3. Adds the option to use a "light" background with the Spotlight Slider paragraph.

Bug Fix: Changes the media form display so that existing media cannot be swapped with a new file, but must be replaced by creating a new version of the entire paragraph type. Simply replacing the existing file was causing the media to be visible before it was published.

Standard Release v1.87 (August 12, 2020)

This release includes standard module updates, fixes some workflow bugs for our developers, and adds additional functionality for future migration of Intercom over to Drupal. This release also introduces a CMS Admin role for easier permission setting and making the admin role more useful for non-developers.

Standard Release v1.86 (August 10, 2020)

Adds ability to embed Streamtext live transcriptions on web pages (just in time for our virtual commencement ceremonies). Also adds transliteration functionality to reduce special characters ($,%,&, etc.) in filenames.

Standard Release v1.85 (July 28, 2020)

Mostly behind-the-scenes improvements for CMS Managers in this release, including updates to the Who's Online view and making Alerts Management easier to find. We've also removed the max height from the new Info Banners for a cleaner display.

Standard Release v1.84 (July 23, 2020)

This release contains module security updates, and some significant fixes for our content migration holding process that Jeff worked really hard on for weeks until he finally cracked it. Great job, Jeff!

Standard Release v1.83 (July 17, 2020)

Added a new Info Banner feature for use with special content promotion on custom landing pages. Also provides access to edit Info Card taxonomy items for CMS Managers.

Minor Release v1.82.2 (July 9, 2020)

Restores missing document paragraphs that were disrupted by the previous release.

Standard Release v1.82 / Hotfix Release v1.82.1 (July 7, 2020)

Some post-holiday maintenance in this release, including adjustments to fix a few elements that were affected by the new component library and improved automated tests to catch potential errors faster. We also updated a few features related to content migration and bulk actions, and added some invisible tools that future updates will build on:

  • Relating a Site or Topic from one Group to another now ensures that sub-pages move with their parent automatically.
  • Transforming a Topic into a Site (or reverse) now automatically updates the local navigation so that sub-pages show in their parent menu, and are not orphaned with the grandparent navigation.
  • Improved the Add Document paragraph type so that a title and description field always show, not just the file name. We've also added an all-purpose document icon to give additional content cues to visual users and screen readers.
  • Makes the Intro field optional for Collapsible Content paragraphs so that extra visual elements aren't showing if they aren't needed.
  • Adds a new "Share With Campus" button only visible to authorized users to eventually create and publish specific campus alert messages through the website.

Hotfix Release

  • There was a bug cutting off the height of images built as Image Flow Text paragraphs. Our developers squashed the bug so fast hardly anyone noticed it had been there to begin with. ?

Standard Release v1.81 (June 29, 2020)

Back to building foundational elements and small maintenance improvements with this release. This includes a new video embed for our Financial Aid audience, the beginning of pieces for an improved Major Finder experience, and a couple bug fixes for migration.

Standard Release v1.80 (June 23, 2020)

You probably won't notice, but this is one of the biggest releases we've had in months, building off weeks of work to move our design pattern and component library to the upgraded Emulsify design system. This tool brings our web developers several improvements in a shared resource that keeps design and code changes synchronized and simple to deploy, and also easier to add to in the future so we can meet changing user needs. Plus, Emulsify makes sure that modern web accessibility standards are "baked in" to all of our components, a critical part of our responsibility for all users. But this release is just the beginning step, getting all our old stuff into this new system. We'll be continuing to do even more with this in the months ahead and we are excited to get started. Stay tuned!

Standard Release v1.79 (June 18, 2020)

Mostly a maintenance release, including a Drupal core update and a fix for our legacy content migration process.

Standard Release v1.78 / Hotfix Release v1.78.1 (June 14, 2020)

This was mostly a maintenance release with bug fixes, but there were a couple of notable updates for our content strategy:

  • Tables and forms built with Knack can now be embedded on a page.
  • The new Collapsible Content paragraph is now available on Topics.
  • A new Disciplines content type will allow us to start relating programs and academic content to areas of study.

Hotfix Release

  • Fixed an import error for Localist migrations

Standard Release v1.77 (June 4, 2020)

There was a form module installed we weren't using and it got in the way of our plans, so it's been removed. We also fixed a pesky issue with the migration of Localist event data that was clogging the system.

Standard Release v1.76 (June 2, 2020)

Minor bug fixes and theme validation. Because who couldn't use a little extra validation in their life?

Standard Release v1.75 (May 28, 2020)

Mostly foundational updates here, getting pieces in place we need to build on top of for future migration efforts. But the real star of this release is our new Collapsible Content paragraph type, just in time for all the extra FAQs we're building to help keep our community informed during the pandemic crisis.

This release focused on updates to our Drupal software, including module updates, and critical core version installations.

Standard Release v1.73 (May 15, 2020)

We're continuing to improve the developer resources so new updates get delivered faster with more automated testing along the way. That's most of what shipped in this release, along with additional elements for new layout options coming soon and a couple minor bug fixes.

Standard Release v1.72 (May 10, 2020)

In addition to the usual maintenance updates, this release includes a lot of small feature updates to improve our content creator experience.

Notable Improvements:

  • News editors can now omit specific news stories from appearing in the Latest News list.
  • Embedding Kaltura videos accepts additional URL variations.
  • Added front-end designs for a new collapsible accordion content view, and for a new Quotes paragraph constrained layout.

Bug Fixes:

  • Temporary unpublished access is working again.
  • When selecting Featured Events, there were a lot of old events from the past showing up as options, which wasn't helpful. Now we only display events from the future as options, which really are the only events worth promoting.

Standard Release v1.71 (April 29, 2020)

There were 41,545 nodes of unnecessary legacy content left behind from old site tools that were slowing down database updates. They no longer sparked joy and have been removed. Updates are much faster now ?

This release also improved other developer processes behind the scenes to make the environment more efficient.

Standard Release v1.70 (April 17, 2020)

This release increased the character limit from 30 to 40 for the title fields on all Card content types, because sometimes you just have to use a longer word. Additional work was done in the back-end foundation to set up future features.

Adds the ability for certain users to embed Tagboard social media views. Please hashtag responsibly.

We're focused on laying ground for future releases here, including back-end elements for new Header Hero options, improved secondary buttons, and large configuration changes. • Made several small changes to create a faster release process
  • Installed the Drupal Core Security update to 8.8.4 to keep our website safe from interlopers.
  • Increased social distancing by 2000%

Notable Bug Fixes:

  • Fixed an error with date parameters affecting News Card Collections.

  • Squashed additional bugs found in the developer build processes.

Additional Updates:

  • Delete permissions are now available to content publishers who need to remove pages of content they own.

Standard Release v1.47 (October 15, 2019)

This release fixed a minor bug affecting just one web page out of 30,000 on our site—but someone noticed and let us know, and we fixed it.

This release also updates the "Add Video" element to allow for embedding Kaltura videos from alternate host domains, and embedding of YouTube Playlist videos.

Standard Release v1.44 (October 1, 2019)

Updates for this release focus on improving site performance. Additional enhancements have been added to lay groundwork for planned migration and development of Intercom and faculty/staff profile content.

Notable UPDATES:

  • Content Delivery Network (CDN) activation - ensures that our website loads fast for all users, no matter where they are located. Using a CDN scatters key bits of our website across servers around the world, allowing even the largest images and files to load equally fast no matter how far away you are from our proxy servers.
  • Quicklink module - like the CDN, this allows prefetching of links on a page so clicking on links to other pages opens them even faster than before.
  • Update PHP Version from 7.1 to 7.3 - this will allow us to extend use of the old WPM content management system into 2020 until migration of legacy content is fully completed.
  • Assigning user groups on login - a first step to improving our permissions, users who sign into the Drupal site can now be identified as Faculty, Staff, or Students. This is a key ground work for future migration of Intercom and faculty/staff profile content planned for the months ahead.

Standard Release v1.43 (September 12, 2019)

Updates for this release include several developer improvements behind the scenes, as well as bug fixes and content manager enhancements.

Notable Bug Fixes:

  • Improved background image scaling on custom landing page hero headers
  • Fixed spacing around featured cards for an improved mobile screen experience

New Features:

  • Improved CMS user tools - we've cleaned up some of the interface to allow content creators to see more of a page in edit mode by collapsing and reducing the size of blog post collection previews. We also have a new view for CMS Managers to quickly find authenticated users in the system and see access and permission levels to help enable faster support.
  • Sassafras Embed - allows embedding of Sassafras computer lab resource availability maps for campus (coming to IC in Fall '19)

Standard Release v1.42 (August 27, 2019)

Updates for this release include several bug fixes and content enhancements.

New Features:

  • Media Galleries (beta) - Create galleries of images and videos to share as a page within your site. There are still some known issues affecting the uploading and management of gallery items, so use this feature with caution. Read our feature documentation for details.
  • Embedded SoundCloud Player - allows SoundCloud content to be embedded on Pages, News, Blogs, and more using the "Add Embed Code" tool.
Here's an example of how that looks:
