Developing Short-Term Study Abroad Programs

Are you interested in developing a short-term study abroad program for your students, or taking students abroad in another capacity?

The Office of International Programs (OIP) at Ithaca College welcomes faculty and staff proposals for short-term study abroad programs and other international travel with students. The OIP staff is available to assist faculty, staff and administrators in designing international programs which are academically, economically and logistically feasible, and which support the educational goals of Ithaca College.

Each year proposals will be reviewed in the context of the total number of international programs to be offered. College sponsored programs should be of sufficient interest to attract the necessary number of participants from the College community for a viable program.

Short-Term Program Proposal Process Guidelines

  • Your proposal for international travel with students will be submitted using an online Formstack proposal form. The proposal is due approximately 12 months before the departure date from the US for most programs.*

    • Programs traveling with students and working with the London Center staff to coordinate programming in London, must use this form.

    • Programs traveling with students to any other location outside the 50 United States for any College‑affiliated purpose, including travel to a U.S. territory, must use this form.

  • Once the OIP receives your proposal, the associate director of International Programs will conduct a thorough risk management review. You may be asked to modify portions of your proposed program based on the risk management review.

  • After the senior director approves the proposal, it will be forwarded to either the provost and senior vice-president for Academic Affairs or the vice-president for Student Affairs & Campus Life (as appropriate) for final review and approval.

  • Once the program receives final approval, the OIP will be in contact with the program proposer to discuss next steps.

Some destinations or activities may require more extensive review, even for very short programs. Faculty and staff are encouraged to notify International Programs of potential travel plans as early in the planning process as possible.
