Ithaca College Physician Assistant Studies Program Clinical Preceptor Benefits

We appreciate your interest in providing supervised clinical practice experiences (SCPEs) for learners in the Physician Assistant Program within the School of Health Sciences and Human Performance (HSHP) at Ithaca College. Your participation provides an essential component of the curriculum and helps prepare the next generation of PAs.

We are pleased to offer you the following benefits of serving as a Clinical Preceptor:

  • Honorarium- The PA program provides an honorarium of $1,000 for each five-week rotation that involves preceptorship. (Notes: The distribution of this honorarium is determined at the discretion of the facility or institution. This honorarium does not extend to learner-initiated sites, where preceptors agree to mentor only a single learner, or to elective rotations.)
  • Continuing Medical Education- The PA program can provide Continuing Medical Education (CME), upon request.
o AAPA Category 1 CME for PA preceptors: PA preceptors can earn two AAPA Category 1 CME credits for each week of full time precepting (minimum 40 hours), with no limit of Category 1 CME credits per calendar year.
o AAPA Category 2 CME for PA preceptors: Precepting can be reported by the preceptor on an hour-by-hour basis for direct supervision of a PA learner. While documentation is not required, a verification letter will be provided upon request.
  • Eligibility to apply for the title Advanced Clinical Educator and additional IC benefits
o Preceptors who have supervised four or more learners with positive evaluations and are committed to precepting two additional learners within the next calendar year are eligible to apply for an advanced title and status. This distinction recognizes their commitment to enhancing PA clinical education. Advanced Clinical Educators also gain access to additional benefits, such as low-cost or complimentary participation in athletic or theatrical events, or services at the IC Wellness Clinic.
o Inquiries about applying should be directed to cgroman@ithaca.edu
  • Eligibility to apply for AAPA’s Clinical Preceptor Recognition Program
o One of the most important ways you can help patients find and receive the best medical care is to help educate the next generation of PAs. AAPA recognizes the hard work of preceptors through its Clinical Preceptor Recognition Program, developed in cooperation with the PA Education Association (PAEA).
