Wayfinding Weekend led by Professor Michael Smith

What did you do last weekend? Some Ithaca College students participated in a one credit Climate Wayfinding workshop, facilitated by Michael Smith. In the words of ENVS major Kristen Avery, "I experienced an opportunity to create a new community focused not only on climate change, but also on authenticity, active listening, and the appreciation of vulnerability." Climate Wayfinding is a workshop designed by the All We Can Save Project, and Professor Smith became a trained facilitator two years ago. "It's a very powerful low stakes, high impact learning experience," he says, "one that helps students develop both individual and community climate adaptation skills." Over the course of the weekend, students from majors across campus (4 of IC's 5 schools were represented) reflected on the emotions they have related to the climate crisis, brought into focus the strengths the each have to be positive agents in the face of this crisis, and developed plans for their climate engagement work. As Gus Fowler, another ENVS major said after the workshop, "I feel anchored in my own character, and I can see much more clearly the road ahead on my journey through the changing climate. And I know if I ever need extra help or support, I have a community of friends that I can lean on right here at IC!"
