Advice to New Teachers

“Find out what are the things that are going to bring you joy with students and do those things. And then, what are the things that bring you joy totally outside of school? (…) I think that if you're working to build the things that bring you joy in school and out of school, then at least you have some light when the rest of it is kind of dark.”

“I would say get involved in your union (…) Not just your union, but find the people, your colleagues who you are drawn to, and then talk to them and figure out what are they doing that's really cool that you can emulate or that you could try. I feel that it'a really important having people who you can look up to and and collaborate with. That's been huge for me (….) I think it's exciting for everyone when it's like, ‘Oh, actually, we have a lot in common.’ But if you only ever hang out with teachers, then your whole life is teachers, right? So it's also really important to have friends outside of work.”

“Make intentional time to hang out with the people who are important to you, or at least call them.”
