Advice to New Teachers

“Do you love it? And whether you do or you don't know, still do it. People are leaving. People are coming and going. It's not always the best, but it's being done. And it's a job (…) So just do it. You'll know what's best for you. You can always change and become a Reading teacher, or move up a level or down a level. Maybe you taught for so many years and now you're just going to coach or go into daycare. When I was a kid I didn't know what I wanted to be, because I wanted to be everything, and I kind of get to do that. When I was teaching Science I was a scientist, and when we were in PE I was an [athlete] and in Social Studies I was a historian and in Writing—I like to write (…) You can do all of it. So I just love it.”

“I think the time off is nice. You can have a second job. It's not always the best, but I've got a couple of little side gigs going on and I can do other things.”

“So I would definitely say, ‘Do it.’”
