Managing Stressors to Avoid Burnout: Bureaucracy & the System

“Compared to other things I could be doing, it's not like if I leave I'll get a better deal some place else, with the skills that I have and what I'm looking for in a job—the hours, the location, the pay (….) No one's offering me some amazing job where I won't have to deal with the annoying things that I deal with. Our administration is wonderful. They really, really are. That doesn't always mean they solve problems, necessarily. The administration usually serves as a buffer between us and [the system]. They'll say, ‘You know, don't deal with this paperwork. It's stupid’ or ‘Do this as quickly as you can because it's just not very important, just a weird bureaucratic requirement.’ And then, also, knowing that the administrators are there with me. We all have to jump through this stupid bureaucratic hoop together, but I have these people that I respect who are making it clear that they think this is stupid. So it's easier.”
