Installing Windows 10 Feature Updates on Campus Computers

As of May 18th, the Windows 10 version 1909 “feature update” is now available for self-installation on College Windows computers. Feature updates are essentially new versions of the operating system. Rather than a large update every several years, such as Windows 7 to Windows 10, Microsoft now offers smaller feature updates twice per year. These incremental operating system updates help to:

  • Simplify the process of keeping devices current
  • Reduce potential app-compatibility issues
  • Minimize the learning curve for users

Windows 10 version 1909 can be installed through the Software Center app. A GlobalProtect VPN connection is required to access Software Center from off campus. If you are currently using a temporary loaner computer from IT, it is not necessary to perform this upgrade. These updates are quite large and will take 1+ hours or longer depending on your network environment. IT recommends starting the installation at the end of the work day and planning for the machine to be unavailable for a few hours. Users with a slow, unreliable or metered network connection should hold off until they are back on campus. The update mainly provides performance improvements and quality enhancements, with little apparent difference to the user experience.

Please see our knowledge base article for specific steps to perform the upgrade.
