Celia Hernandez is a second year MLK scholar with an interest in working on Racism in
education. After dealing with the effects of the school system herself as a person of color,
she’s promised to create safe spaces for peers. Celia has always been a support system
for those around her; she prides herself on her inclusivity-based work. Lately she’s been
doing Volunteer Work at IC3 (Ithaca Childcare Community Center), working on ensuring
that the young kids she works with understand compassion. She’s learned based on the
techniques that she acquired through classes, the people who have mentored her, and the
continuous support of the MLK system. Right now, a project on campus she is working on
with students in Park, is to create a brand-new show that celebrates black culture.
To be an MLK scholar to me means having an active presence on and around campus,
being leaders, and pushing for change. To be able to have a large support system behind
you when there’s that urge to make change.
