Business Student Experiences

In clubs and activities outside the classroom, you can meet new people, explore different areas of business, give back to the community, and make connections and friendships that will last long after you graduate.

Meet the Firms

A faculty member is speaking with a group of students seated around him in comfortable chairs.

Explore your future beyond the classroom through our career immersion trips. Each fall and spring, students travel to major business hubs such as New York City and Boston to visit leading organizations, connect with industry professionals, and gain firsthand insight into workplace culture. Past trips have included visits to companies such as Bloomberg LP, Massachusetts General Hospital, Citi, Goldman Sachs, and J.P. Morgan Chase. The experience culminates in a networking event with Ithaca College alumni, giving you valuable opportunities to build professional connections, explore career paths, and envision your future in the industry.

Business Competitions and Experiential Learning

South Hill Investment Fund

The South Hill Business Fund provides you with a unique opportunity to gain hands-on investment management experience while overseeing a portfolio valued at nearly $1 million. Student analysts and portfolio managers develop real-world skills in equity research, financial analysis, portfolio strategy, and investment decision-making while helping generate returns that support scholarships for future School of Business students. It is an exceptional opportunity to apply classroom learning, experience the challenges of managing real assets, and make a lasting impact on the next generation of business students.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program

Put your accounting knowledge into practice through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. Each spring, you'll work directly with community members to prepare tax returns, building valuable experience in tax preparation, client service, problem-solving, and professional communication while serving those in need.

Startup Idea Demo Day

Compete for startup funding and turn your business idea into reality through our annual entrepreneurship pitch competition. Held each fall, students present innovative business concepts for the opportunity to earn up to $5,000 in startup funding. Participants sharpen their pitching skills, receive feedback from experienced entrepreneurs and business leaders, and build valuable professional connections while networking at Rev: Ithaca Startup Works, Ithaca's premier startup incubator and innovation hub.

Business Plan Demo Day

Launch your business idea through our annual Business Plan Competition. Held each spring, this entrepreneurship competition gives students the opportunity to develop a startup business plan, pitch their venture to judges, and compete for cash prizes to help turn their ideas into reality. Participants can work one-on-one with faculty and local business mentors and enroll in Ideas Into Action , a School of Business course designed to guide aspiring entrepreneurs through business planning, market research, financial strategy, and investor pitching.

ITHACON

Held each spring, Ithacon is one of the most distinctive experiential learning opportunities in the School of Business. This student-run comic book, pop culture, and entertainment convention brings together fans, creators, vendors, and industry professionals for a day of programming and community engagement. What makes Ithacon unique is that students are responsible for planning and managing the event, gaining hands-on experience in event management, marketing, sponsorship, budgeting, operations, and leadership. Whether they arrive as lifelong comic enthusiasts or aspiring business professionals, students collaborate to deliver a large-scale event that develops real-world skills while celebrating creativity, innovation, and popular culture.

Student Clubs

The Core Trading Consultants, also known as CTC, is an entirely student run finance organization that gives its members the opportunity to integrate coursework with real-world experience. This opportunity is realized through active management of the Ithaca College Investment Club (ICIC) mutual fund, which has roughly $100,000 in combined assets.

Every Thursday from 12:10-1:00pm, in the Trading Room (BUS 105), the Core Trading Consultants assess the fund’s progress, discuss the current state of the market, research new securities, and teach members finance related topics of their choice. Additionally, the organization provides access to and technical assistance with the Trading Room's state of the art financial software.

Like an investment bank, the CTCs are broken down into sector groups. During these group meetings (scheduled as additional meetings, apart from the general meeting on Thursday), the CTCs research companies within their industry, set up watch lists, and compare fundamentals between firms. Over time, each industry group selects a stock that they believe will appreciate in value and gives a “buy presentation” during a general Thursday meeting. A vote by alumni determines if the stock will be added to the fund’s portfolio (a majority vote resulting in an acquisition). Each industry group is composed of a Senior Analyst (an upper class student), and a group of Junior Analysts, who are taught the necessary skills needed to succeed in the financial field by their Senior Analyst.

The CTCs are a valuable asset to the School of Business in providing new opportunities for the club’s members to expand their financial knowledge, experience, and confidence. By joining this organization, members will build relationships with fellow students, professors, and the club’s close-knit alumni network.
