Students interested in pursuing a teaching career can join our 4+1 "Teach in Five" program. Incoming undergraduate students as well as current Ithaca College students can declare their interest in elementary or secondary education at the same time they select an undergraduate major. Earn your bachelor's degree in four years in the discipline of your choice and complete the pre-professional education core at the same time. Maintain a 3.0 GPA throughout your program, complete the midpoint review successfully, and in the fall of your senior year, you can apply early to our 13-month intensive graduate programs in either childhood or adolecent education; your program will begin once you have completed your bachelor's degree. Graduate tuition is discounted and very competitive, and graduate assistantships are available to qualified students.
Research clearly shows that college graduates will change jobs and careers an average of six times throughout their lives. Our "Teach in Five" program (4 years of undergraduate study plus 1 year in a graduate program) recognizes this reality and offers students the opportunity to be prepared for their future - wherever it may take them. As part of the pre-professional core curriculum, students will have the opportunity to take several education courses along with a carefully selected series of optional courses that enhance preparation for teaching and learning, attend all Education Department student functions, and complete several field placements in area schools. It is a great way to ease into the graduate teacher certification program while working on your undergraduate degree and to broaden your options after graduation. And, since teachers need to earn a master's degree within a stated time period, you'll already have that graduate degree completed when you leave Ithaca College. If your career path keeps you in teaching - great! If not, you will always have your undergraduate major to build upon.
