JAZZ VOCAL ENSEMBLE (JVE)

The Ithaca College Jazz Vocal Ensemble (JVE), directed by John W. White, has a long and rich history of music making in New York state. The group’s repertoire spans many styles within the jazz tradition, including a cappella and accompanied works in swing, Latin, contemporary, and funk styles, among others.

Established in the 1970s by the late David Riley, distinguished professor of Music Education, over the years the JVE has included numerous members that went on to establish successful careers in the music profession. In the mid-1980s, Dave Riley’s direction brought the IC-JVE international acclaim—which included a 1986 performance tour of high-profile European Jazz festivals—and his teaching provided training for many jazz educators and performers, including three founding members of the Grammy Award winning New York Voices.

JVE limits membership to 14-18 select singers (varying as appropriate) and specializes in advanced repertoire (levels IV-VI). The singers are accompanied by a rhythm section and occasionally horns. The group is a campus-wide ensemble, with membership available to graduate and undergraduate students, regardless of major. Class meeting is four hours per week. Numerous concerts both on and off campus are usually scheduled throughout the school year. Additional performances, mostly off campus, are always under negotiation and subject to change (so stay tuned). See below for dates of upcoming performances.

AUDITION PROCESS

For details about repertoire to prepare and the sign-up process, see the AUDITIONS link (column to the left). Please note that all interested vocalists, even previous members, must sign up for an audition.

JAZZ VOCAL REPERTORY ENSEMBLE(JVRE)

As compared to JVE, the Jazz Vocal Repertory Ensemble (JVRE) focuses on more foundational jazz choir repertoire (levels I-IV, higher as appropriate) and is open to any student who can qualify by audition. Class meeting is two hours per week; membership will not be limited to a set number. For more information about the JVRE, see the separate page "Jazz Vocal Repertory Ensemble" (column to the left).

At least two concerts (end of semester) are scheduled for the typical school year. Additional performances, mostly off campus, are always under negotiation and subject to change (so stay tuned). See below for dates of upcoming performances.
