Gregory J. Mantone '13

Gregory Mantone was the son of Stephen and Linda Mantone and the older brother of Emily Mantone. Greg was raised in Mount Sinai, New York, where he graduated from Mount Sinai High School. At the time of his death, Greg was a third-year music education major at Ithaca College. Greg played the euphonium in the Symphonic Band, for which he was a section leader, and he sang in the college chorus.

From early childhood, Greg loved music. He loved to sing, whether alone or in a group, and he participated in chorus from elementary school through college. In high school, Greg played both euphonium and trombone and belonged to his high school band, jazz band, and orchestra. Greg participated in all-county, all-state and all-eastern symphonic bands.

There are so many ways to describe Greg. He was funny, creative, entertaining, intelligent, responsible, and hard working. He had many diverse interests, including music, literature, history, art, and especially theater. Greg enjoyed his life to the fullest. He was a loving son, a devoted brother, an excellent role model for his sister and for the students he was learning to teach. Yet none of this describes who he truly was: a kind, sweet, loving, and generous person.

The comment consistently made by people who knew Greg has been, “He was the kindest person I have ever met.” He left behind a heartbroken family and many, many friends who loved him. In a life that was all too short, Greg touched many people's hearts.
