What is a Project?
The Project Management Institute, or PMI, is a global organization dedicated to the practice of project management (http://www.pmi.org/). In their Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) guide PMI defines a project as follows:
“A project is a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service, or result.”
Notice two key words in the definition; temporary and unique. Both of these characteristics delineate projects from operational work. Using the analogy of a ship, operational work keeps the engines going and the ship moving. However, projects are analogous to the ship’s rudder. Projects help the ship make changes that will help the ship get to its desired destination.
This is why it is essential that project proposals are evaluated in light of their potential to help the organization achieve its strategic goals. A project may be absolutely appropriate for one organization to undertake yet totally inappropriate for another organization.
A well-managed project portfolio includes only projects that will support the organizations strategic goals.
