Attending Ithaca Young Writers Institute?

All participants who have verified their attendance in the Ithaca Writers Institute by providing full payment by the May 15th deadline will receive a detailed participant email. This email will include information about what to bring, and where and when to arrive at Ithaca College.

In the meantime, these FAQs will help answer your questions. We will be letting you know soon about what additional forms you'll need to complete.


When am I expected to arrive and depart? 
You are expected to attend check-in. Please plan to arrive sometime between 2-4 pm on Sunday, July 3, 2022. At that time you will be given your room key and meal card. You will then go to your residence hall to find your room, meet your roommate, other program participants, and the summer resident assistants. At 4:30 pm there will be a welcome, followed by dinner, campus tour, floor meetings, orientation, and opportunities to connect with other participants.

On the last day of the program, July 15, there is a closing reception for participants and their families. The program begins at 11:30 and usually runs until 1:00 p.m. Students will check out of the dorm just prior to this closing event.

What is the course schedule for the program?
Accepted students will receive information about the schedule upon arrival.

What types of activities will there be after class each day?
Students can visit the downtown Ithaca Commons (parental permission is required for unsupervised off-campus trips), work out in our award-winning Fitness Center (students must be at least 16 years old to use the equipment in the Fitness Center), play games on the quads, scan the stars in our very own observatory, attend local theater, and hike and picnic in area parks. Additional activities will be planned based on interest, including readings and workshops with the program's special guests.

I'm a commuter. How much of this applies to me?
Commuting students should plan to attend, if possible the program orientation between 4:30-5:30 on the day of check-in. Commuting students will start their days at 9:00, so they should be on campus between 8:45 and 9:00. Classes end at 3:30, but commuting students are welcome to stay for programming later in the day (ice cream socials, hikes, concerts, etc). Lunches and dinners are also included for all commuters. 

The weekend activities include trips to local sites like Taughannock Falls and the Ithaca Farmer's Market. Commuters are welcome, but not required, to attend. Commuting students' travel to and from these trip sites can be arranged as needed.


Will I need to bring additional money?
Pocket money will provide for incidentals such as snacks, supplies, movies, and miscellaneous purchases at the Campus Store. ATMs are available on campus. Unfortunately, personal checks cannot be cashed on campus.

What attire would be appropriate and what should I bring?
Dress will be informal. Be prepared for warm (occasionally hot) days.  Nights are usually cooler and a sweater or light jacket may be needed. Bring a swimsuit for the outdoor pool and if you plan on participating in sports, bring a tennis racket, soccer ball, golf clubs, softball glove, etc…

Do I have to bring anything for my dorm room, like bedding or snacks?
The College provides sheets, a blanket, a small towel, and will provide a linen exchange once per week. You may want to bring an extra towel and your own pillow. You may also want to bring coat hangers, a reading lamp, a telephone, and a fan (because dorms are not air-conditioned).

No appliances will be permitted in the dorm room. All dorms have coin-operated snack machines. (Some dorms have lounges equipped with microwave, refrigerator, etc…) Also, RAs make routine trips to Wegman’s market and will bring in additional snacks for program participants.


Where will I stay during the program?
You will stay in a residence hall on campus with one or sometimes two other roommates. Students are housed by gender, with dorm floors, or wings of floors, separated by gender. Bathrooms are single-stall. Curfews are imposed for all residential students, and students are checked into the dorms at curfew. Students are also required to be in their rooms by a certain time. Residence staff make regular checks of rooms after check-in.

Who is in charge?
A residential coordinator is in charge of non-academic portions of the program including life in the residence hall. A staff of resident advisers, in addition, live on the residence hall floors throughout the duration of the program. This team of RAs is closely supervised by both the residential coordinator and the faculty director. The Office of Public Safety is open 24 hours and can be reached at 607-274-3333 for actual emergencies.

What do I eat?
Meals are served at the Campus Center Dining Hall. You can review more about the college's dining options here at the Dining Services website. Yes! Gluten-free (and vegetarian) menu options are available. For more information or to schedule gluten-free meals during your stay, contact the college's executive chef at 607-274-3009.

What equipment/appliances are in my dorm room?
No appliances will be permitted in the dorm room. All dorms have coin-operated snack machines. (Some dorms have lounges equipped with microwave, refrigerator, etc…) Also RAs make routine trips to Wegman’s market and will bring in additional snacks for program participants. 

Are there laundry facilities and are they coin operated?
Each dormitory has free laundry facilities. You may want to bring a small container of detergent and a laundry bag.

Will I be able to bring my own computer and are there computers on campus?
Computer labs with very fast Internet access are available for your use, but you may want to bring your own computer for use in your room. All academic and administrative buildings, as well as all residence halls, have wi-fi coverage.

Will I be able to receive mail/packages while at Ithaca College?
