Outlets are recognized for their work at the state and national levels.

The outstanding student media organizations at Ithaca College are annually recognized at the state and national levels for the high-quality work produced by the students comprising their staffs. This past academic year was no exception.

“The students who work at ICTV, The Ithacan, and WICB and VIC should be commended for these awards,” said Jack Powers, interim dean of the Roy H. Park School of Communications. “Our co-curriculars are student-run and what the staff members have done in this past year is nothing short of extraordinary. These awards validate what we have known for a long time--the Park School is one of the best media schools in the country.”

“I’m extremely proud of every staff member’s hard work and dedication. It’s truly a team effort,” said Jeremy Menard, television and radio operations manager. “Many don't see the countless hours the students spend every day in the Park School’s radio and television studios to learn, grow as media producers and develop creative and innovative programming. While the students don’t work at the stations simply to win awards and receive recognition, it’s a good feeling to know the shows and programming are connecting with each station’s audience.”

Samuel Ives ’21, who served as station manager for WICB during the past year, offered praise for his fellow students.

“I feel proud of and happy for everyone who worked in IC radio during that year,” he said. “What is being recognized is the decisions we made, the effort and time we took, and the trust we put into each other. We are being recognized for making things work despite the obstacles we were presented with, and for that, I am pleased. This is more validation that we did the right things after all.”

“The ACP’s recognition of the work of our student-journalists is an incredible honor any year, but is particularly so now, given everything the students have experienced over the past nearly 20 months,” said Casey Musarra, advisor for The Ithacan. “Their dedication to putting out a paper and having an online presence during a global pandemic, despite all of the hurdles that come with that, is impressive.”

Musarra also offered praise for Michael Serino, who retired this past spring after three decades as the advisor for the paper.

“I’m proud to have played just a small role in the students’ success, but it’s Michael Serino, who was The Ithacan’s advisor for almost 30 years, who deserves recognition in everything he’s done to help make The Ithacan what it is today, which is one of the best college newspapers in the country,” she said.
