Chronicle of Higher Education recognizes Ithaca College again.

Ithaca College has been recognized as a top Fulbright producer among master’s-level institutions for the 2020-2021 academic year by the Chronicle of Higher Education.

The Fulbright Program, now in its 75th year, provides grants for teaching assistant programs and research programs in various foreign countries. It is the U.S. government’s flagship international educational exchange program.

This academic year, 10 students applied to the program and three — Meaghan McElroy ’20, Phoebe Holland ’20 and Hannah Gignoux ’19 — were accepted.

“It's wonderful that IC is once again recognized as a top producer of student Fulbright awards. It's a testament to the intellectual ambition and global curiosity of our undergraduates, even during a pandemic.”

McElroy will be studying the intersection of journalism and climate change in Samoa, Holland accepted an English teaching assistant award in Spain, and Gignoux was offered, but did not accept, a Fulbright/Aberystwyth University Award to pursue a master’s degree in the Department of International Politics at Aberystwyth University in Wales.

“It's wonderful that IC is once again recognized as a top producer of student Fulbright awards,” said professor of English Hugh Egan, who is the faculty liaison for students seeking external grants and awards and coordinates the student Fulbright application process. “It's a testament to the intellectual ambition and global curiosity of our undergraduates, even during a pandemic.”

“Our alumni continue to distinguish themselves as global thinkers, and this recognition from the Fulbright program reflects that. Their international experience embodies the college's goal of being a private college serving a global good, and will serve them well as they embark upon careers of distinction.”

This year’s success continues Ithaca College’s strong performance in the Fulbright program. Since 1995, 41 students have won awards, and the college is often listed among top producing institutions.

“Our alumni continue to distinguish themselves as global thinkers, and this recognition from the Fulbright program reflects that,” said La Jerne Terry Cornish, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs. “Their international experience embodies the college's goal of being a private college serving a global good, and will serve them well as they embark upon careers of distinction.”

Since its inception in 1946, the Fulbright Program has provided more than 400,000 participants — chosen for their academic merit and leadership potential — with the opportunity to exchange ideas and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns.
