Since my sophomore year fall at Ithaca college I have been a volunteer for the YMCA kids club every Friday. This is a program which provides adaptive learning to children with disabilities, whether it be swimming or just interactive play. I plan on continuing the community service opportunity till I graduate, because I find it to be a peaceful and centering part of my weekly routine. The kids throughly enjoy their time spent in kids club and often talk to their parents about other works and how they look forward to coming each week.
This past summer I worked at a local smoothie, which provided a healthy alternative to a seemingly food desert town. Working at this smoothie shop ensured me that communities of color are indeed seeking health choices, however often they are not given these resources. At this job I also struggled with feeling like the cost of our products did not appropriately meet the needs of the community I was in, which further validated my opinion that everyone deserves access to affordable healthy alternatives
Lastly, at ithaca college in on the women’s lacrosse team. Being in a collegiate sports team has taught me the importance of community while working towards a common goal. Everyone on an athletic team cares about the success of their teammates, because they understand that their success benefits the whole group.
Being an MLK scholar has reminded me to center social justice issues in my everyday life. Whether it be on the field or working a 9-5 job I’m reminded of the importance of social issues like equity and community. I’m also grateful for the experiences I’ve had as an MLK scholar which has allowed me to talk to people who have been centering social justice their entire lives.
