Established by Larry Metzger, M.S. ’87, to honor his sons, Thomas ’02 and David ’05, and to support the continuation of the undergraduate summer research experience at Ithaca College, which his sons found to be invaluable. The fund, administered by the College’s biology department, will provide the selected student with a stipend for summer research and travel to meetings. Preference will be given to a biology or biochemistry major with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.2. The student will submit an application briefly describing his or her proposed summer research along with a letter from the faculty mentor signifying willingness to direct the student. Financial aid status is not a consideration for this stipend, and the stipend will not affect the student’s financial aid package.

A faculty committee selected to administer the fund will choose the summer research stipend recipient(s). Following selection, each student will be notified and provided with background about the scholarship. The donor contact will receive information about each recipient. Others who would like to show their support are also welcome to contribute to this fund.  The family and students would greatly appreciate it too.

Supports Student Research

Faculty advisers teach students how to request funding to support their research.

Many students are awarded funding throughout the year via this Fund.

It enables them to:

  • purchase items for their research
  • assist in the costs to attend research conferences.
