Meet Dr. Joseph Evan, MSCHE Team Chair
Dr. Joseph Evan is Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and Professor of Mathematics at King’s College (Wilkes-Barre, PA). Dr. Evan earned a B.A. in Mathematics from King’s College and a M.A. and Ph.D. in Mathematical Sciences from Binghamton University. He joined the mathematics faculty at King’s College in Fall 2000 and served for 11 years as a member of the full-time teaching faculty, including a 5-year term as chair of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. In Fall 2011, he began an appointment as Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty, and in 2014, he was appointed Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.
In his role as provost, Dr. Evan oversees the College’s regional accreditation and specialized accreditations for several academic programs. He is also an experienced peer reviewer for Middle States accreditation. His responsibilities as provost at King’s include leadership of strategic planning and academic and institutional assessment.
Under Dr. Evan’s leadership as provost, King’s has engaged in significant program expansion, grown student engagement, and increased student success. Accomplishments include the development of a school of health sciences, addition of accredited engineering programs, establishment of new programs through partnerships with other institutions, development of new online programs and course offerings, addition of the College’s first doctoral program, increases in opportunities for and participation in study abroad and undergraduate research, and improvement in the College’s first-to-second year retention rate to a 23-year high.
Dr. Evan also maintains a personal commitment to teaching and learning. He continues to teach mathematics courses at King’s on an annual basis, and in his free time, he serves as an assistant basketball coach at a local high school.
