Continuing the Tradition

Justin Stangel named head coach of men’s crew program.

Justin Stangel will take over the men’s crew program as the sixth head coach in school history. He will begin his official appointment on July 12.

“I am thrilled to announce the appointment of Justin Stangel as our head men’s crew coach,” said Associate Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Susan Bassett ’79. “Justin emerged from a competitive national search as the ideal candidate to take the reins. His experience as a rower at Syracuse, Oxford and as a national team member charted the course for his passion for the sport. He has gained valuable experience coaching on the Division I level, the high school level and at Liberty League member Hobart College. Justin has a proven track record in recruiting and articulated a clear path for success for the Bombers. I am confident that Coach Stangel will build on the tradition of success established in IC men's crew. We welcome him to the Bomber family and the Ithaca College community.”

Stangel comes to South Hill after spending the 2022 season as the associate head coach at Hobart College in Geneva, New York. This past spring, Stangel helped guide the Statesmen to their 16th straight Liberty League championship.

“As I went through the interview process, it became clear that this is a place where student-athletes can compete for championships while achieving their goals in the classroom.”

“I want to thank Susan Bassett and the search committee for this opportunity,” said Stangel. “As I went through the interview process, it became clear that this is a place where student-athletes can compete for championships while achieving their goals in the classroom. Taking over for Dan Robinson will not be easy, but I look forward to the challenge of leading the team in the next chapter and to getting on campus in July to hit the ground running to prepare for the upcoming season.”

Dan Robinson ‘79 had announced in March that he would be retiring following the 2022 season after 35 years as men’s head crew coach.
Stangel also spent six seasons at Syracuse University as an associate head coach and an assistant coach. While at Syracuse, he also served as the recruiting coordinator.

Outside of the collegiate ranks, Stangel has worked with the USRowing Olympic Development Program, coaching the U20 High Performance athletes.

Stangel graduated from Syracuse in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in health and exercise science. He was a four-year member of the men’s rowing program and a co-captain his senior year.

He was also a member of the United States Junior Team in 2002 and 2003, where he earned a silver medal in the 8+. He then rowed for the University of Oxford Boat Club from 2007 to 2009 and for the United States Senior National Team from 2010 to 2012.

Stangel earned his master of science degree in science and medicine of athletic performance from Oxford in 2009 and has his USRowing Level 3 Coaching Certification.
