The Ithaca College School of Music will continue its Angela and William Haines Young Concert Artists Residency with a performance by celebrated double bass player Xavier Foley, with Kelly Lin on piano, at 8:15 p.m. on Wednesday, April 6, in the Hockett Family Recital Hall of the James J. Whalen Center for Music.
The concert is free and open to the public, and we ask that face coverings be worn in our concert halls.
Xavier Foley is known for communicating his virtuosity and passion for music on the double bass, which is rarely presented as a solo instrument. Winner of a prestigious 2018 Avery Fisher Career Grant, he was recognized on New York WQXR’s “19 for 19” Artists to Watch list and featured on PBS Thirteen’s NYC-ARTs.
Also a composer, Foley was co-commissioned by Carnegie Hall and the Sphinx Organization for a new work entitled “For Justice and Peace” for violin, bass, and string orchestra, which was recently performed at venues including Carnegie Hall as part of a program designed to promote social justice.
His Ithaca College concert program will include several of his own works as well as pieces by Bach, Bottesini, and Vivaldi.
Among other honors, Foley won the 2016 Young Concert Artists International Auditions along with four Performance Prizes and a Paiko Foundation Fellowship, and First Prizes at Astral’s 2014 National Auditions, Sphinx’s 2014 Competition, and the 2011 International Society of Bassists Competition.
Kelly Yu-Chieh Lin is an active and sought-after collaborative pianist, who began her musical studies at an early age on the piano, violin, viola, and er-hu. Soon after, she began winning national competitions and awards on all four instruments in her native Taiwan. She has made regular appearances in New York at Carnegie Hall, has served on the jury of the Steinway Society Competition, and has been staff accompanist at Rutgers University. She is currently a collaborative pianist at The Juilliard School, Mannes/New School, Manhattan School of Music, and Columbia University.
The Angela and William Haines Young Concert Artists Residency was established through the generosity of Angela and William “Bill” Haines, lifelong music lovers who are committed to creating transformative experiences for students and all members of the Ithaca College community. The residency supports in-residence learning opportunities for students in the School of Music, including recital performances, master classes, lectures, coaching, mentoring, and feedback sessions.
Foley’s master class at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, April 5, in the Hockett Family Recital Hall will also be free and open to the public.
