International Women’s Day event is hosted in Campus Center.

On Wednesday, March 8, the world celebrated International Women’s Day. At Ithaca College, students, faculty, and staff came to the campus center to take part in an event hosted jointly by the college’s BOLD Women’s Leadership Network and the Center for LGBT Education, Outreach, and Services.

Both BOLD and the LGBT Center have a vested interest in women’s leadership and equity and have worked to promote the pursuits of equality and justice. With that in mind, they teamed up to spread awareness about the holiday.

“This is an issue that affects a large part of the global population –– it’s an international campaign we feel strongly about,” said Sam Elebiary BOLD program director.

Students set up a table in the Campus Center where members of the IC community could stop by, learn more about the significance of the day, and write short statements pledging to commit to the ideas of gender equality, and read the statements written by others.

Grace Berlin ’26, was appreciative of the agency displayed by her peers.

“As a woman, I think it’s so important to support each other and fight for our equality, especially during times when our rights are being challenged,” she said.

Elebiary was pleased that whole Ithaca College community, could come together to show support.

“The event isn’t just for women,” she said. “It’s for the entire student body to get involved in. We also want to put a special focus on transgender women because we’re in collaboration with the LGBT Center.”

Chike Nezianya ’26 was passionate about showing his support for the important women in his life.

“I think [that] it’s critical that we fully appreciate and celebrate the things women do,” he said. “They’re our mothers, teachers, mentors, and friends, and they’re important.”

Overall, the event had a positive impact on the attendees.

“It was really impactful for me to read about how people want to take action and be an active part of the cause because often there’s just a bunch of talk rather than actual movement towards improvement,” said Grace Jun ’26.
