Radical retelling of classic morality play opens 2019-2020 mainstage season.

Ithaca College Theatre Arts opens its 2019-2020 mainstage season with Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ “Everybody.” Opening Thursday, October 3 in Clark Theatre, this radical retelling of the 15th century morality play “Everyman” creates a button-pushing, meta-theatrical experience for the audience.

Using the premise that a person’s good and bad deeds will be weighed after death, the play tells the story of “Everybody” as they seek allegorical characters like Friendship and Kinship to accompany them to the beyond. Along the way, the production delves into topics of body image, race, friendship and social responsibility.

Ticket Information

Performances of “Everybody” run from October 3-12 at 8 p.m., with matinee performances at 2 p.m. on October 6 and 12, and a preview performance on October 1. Tickets range in price from $10 to $18, and can be purchased online at tickets.ithaca.edu. Tickets may also be purchased over the phone at (607) 274-3224, or in person at the Ithaca College Theatre Box Office in Dillingham Center. The box office is open noon-5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and noon-4 p.m. on Friday.

Dillingham Center accommodates all patrons. Individuals with special needs are asked to contact (607) 274-3224 to request accommodations as soon as possible.

“I would like the audience to be inspired to live their best lives and begin the process of becoming their own best friend,” said director Cynthia Henderson, associate professor in the Department of Theatre Arts.

“Everybody” was a finalist for the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Writer Jacobs-Jenkins won the 2014 Obie Award for Best New American Play. In 2016 he was awarded a Macarthur “Genius Grant.”
