The Ithaca College School of Music, Theatre, and Dance continues its 2023–24 theatre production season with the Tony Award-winning musical “Disney’s Newsies.”

With music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Jack Feldman, and book by Harvey Fierstein, this high-energy show tells the inspiring story of newsboys in 19th-century New York City. It is a thrilling tale of camaraderie, determination, the fight for workers’ rights, and celebrating resilience and unity.

“Disney’s Newsies” will be presented in the Hoerner Theatre and runs select dates between October 25 and November 1. This production will be directed by Cynthia Henderson and choreographed by Daniel Gwirtzman, with music direction by Jeff Theiss.

Following the Wednesday, October 25, performance, there will be a post-show talkback featuring original Broadway cast member and 2011 Ithaca College alumnus Ben Fankhauser.

Original "Newsies" cast member Ben Fankhauser '11 will participate in a post-show talkback on Oct. 25.

“Disney’s Newsies” is an electrifying adaptation of Disney’s 1992 film that delves into the newsboys’ strike of 1899 in the heart of New York City. At its core, it follows the charismatic Jack Kelly and a band of scrappy young newsboys who take a stand against powerful newspaper magnates like Joseph Pulitzer. When Pulitzer raises the price of newspapers, cutting into their meager earnings, these newsies channel their frustration into a fervent uprising. With unity and an unwavering belief in their cause, they rally more newsies to their side, including the steadfast Davey and his younger brother Les.

“When I was asked if I wanted to direct ‘Disney’s Newsies,’ my initial thought was, ‘How fun!’ Then I did as one of my teachers, the legendary director Lloyd Richards, would remind us to do. Research every aspect of the play,” says director Cynthia Henderson. “Yes, ‘Newsies’ is a musical, but at its core it is first and foremost a play, a story, a moment in the life of a group of ordinary people who had to find their way through an extraordinary set of circumstances.”

Newsies is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI. www.mtishows.com
