Student-Athletes Make Their Mark

During NCAA’s Division III week, IC recognizes its student-athletes for their achievements

Ithaca College has a rich tradition of athletic success, with 15 team national championships, 46 total individual national championships and more than 1,600 All-Americans. But the excellence isn’t confined to the fields, gyms and water. The academic prowess of IC’s student-athletes was on full display throughout the year.

Ithaca College took the opportunity to recognizes its athletes’ achievements – on and off the field – during NCAA’s Division III Week, from April 13-19.

During the 2019-20 school year, a total of 778 student-athletes across all five schools represented the Bombers, with 577 of them earning a GPA of 3.0 or higher and 23 earning a perfect 4.0. Overall, Bomber student-athletes have an average GPA of 3.272.

A total of 140 fall and winter student-athletes earned Liberty League All-Academic honors, and several teams and athletes earned district- and nation-wide accolades for their academic achievements.

“Ithaca College student-athletes live the scholar-athlete ideal,” said Susan Bassett ’79, associate vice president and director of intercollegiate athletics and recreational sports. “They consistently prove that academic excellence and athletic excellence are compatible endeavors. I am proud of them for their sense of purpose and their determination to excel in everything they do.”

Student-Athlete Awards

Below is a rundown of the awards IC student-athletes have earned throughout the year. More Information can be found on the IC athletics website.

Men’s cross country: Team earned All-Academic honors, five student-athletes were named All-Academic Individuals.

Women’s cross country: Team earned All-Academic honors, seven student-athletes were named All-Academic Individuals, Parley Hannan ’20 was named the Women's Scholar Athlete of the Year.

Field hockey: Team earned the Academic Team Award, Savanna Lenker’ 20 was named a Zag Field Hockey/NFHCA Scholar of Distinction, 19 student-athletes were named to the 2019 Zag Field Hockey Academic Squad.

Football: Five student-athletes were CoSIDA Academic All-District honorees.

Gymnastics: Four student-athletes were named NCGA Senior Scholar All-Americans.

Men’s soccer: Two student-athletes were CoSIDA Academic All-District honorees.

Volleyball: One student-athlete was a CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree.

Wrestling: Team ranked second nationally in team GPA, 12 student-athletes were named to the ECWC All-Academic Team, nine were named NWCA Scholar All-Americans.
