Giselle Martinez, a Junior Year Scholar, devoted the 2024–2025 academic year to meaningful community engagement through two impactful organizations. She volunteered with IC Eco Reps, an on-campus sustainability initiative, where she spends Friday’s packaging leftover food for redistribution to individuals and families in need throughout the greater Ithaca community. Her work helped reduce food waste while directly supporting local food security efforts. In addition, Giselle served with Tompkins County Amphibian Migration and Road Patrol (TCAMP), an environmental organization committed to protecting local amphibian populations during their critical spring migration. Through hands-on conservation efforts, she contributed to safeguarding native species and raising awareness about the region’s diverse amphibian habitats. She looks forward to volunteering again with TCAMP for the upcoming Spring 2026 migration season.
In Fall 2025, Giselle broadened her global perspective by spending a semester abroad in London. Immersed in a vibrant international setting, she expanded her academic and cultural understanding through exploration, travel, and meaningful cross-cultural connections. As a passionate documentary filmmaker, her time abroad deepened her appreciation for diverse stories, perspectives, and lived experiences, further inspiring her commitment to storytelling that fosters empathy and human connection. Back on campus, Giselle collaborates on student film sets, continuously developing her technical skills and creative voice alongside her peers. She also serves on the executive board of a new student organization launching in Fall 2026, demonstrating her leadership and dedication to building inclusive creative communities.
Being an MLK Scholar means fostering a strong, purpose-driven community alongside individuals who are equally committed to creating a more equitable, safe, and welcoming environment, both within the Ithaca College campus and throughout the greater Ithaca community.
