At IC, we define a micro-credential as a set of 2-4 credit-bearing courses designed to help you develop in-demand specialized skillsets. Micro-credentials can be discipline specific, or they may bridge departments or schools. They are typically organized around development of transferable skills and competencies that are valuable for career advancement. They will provide you with the opportunity to expand or deepen expertise in your field, or to explore subjects outside of your major.
What is a Micro-credential?
Why Micro-credentials Matter
Micro-credentials respond to job markets and graduate programs that increasingly value specialized, demonstrable skills by offering students a focused, efficient pathway to career-relevant learning that supplements their major. They provide targeted skill development delivered in a shorter, more accessible format than traditional degree programs, and allow learners to explore a subject area, stack credentials toward larger academic goals, and gain relevant experience that supports lifelong learning.

Rather than “declaring” a micro-credential in advance, you instead enroll in and complete the required courses. Once all of these requirements have been completed, you must contact the department chair and submit this form to have your work verified. After verification, the micro-credential will be officially recorded on your transcript. For more information, please reach out to your academic advisor.
