At Ithaca College, we know that the field of modern chemistry is always changing. The structure of our academic programs are designed to provide students with a strong basis in each of the subfields of chemistry followed by opportunities for flexible learning in advanced and interdisciplinary modern topics. Our faculty are continually adapting existing courses and developing new ones to meet the needs and interests of our students.
Each student begins their studies through four semesters of foundational coursework and laboratory experiences. Students gain both problem solving skills and broad perspectives on chemistry from Principles of Chemistry, a year of Organic Chemistry, and a final semester of Quantitative Chemistry.
Students develop laboratory skills through our Experimental Chemistry series. Through each course, students learn new techniques across the traditional boundaries of the disciplines of chemistry concurrently as well as reinforce the concepts of their other coursework. Students gain a strong understanding of chemical structure, reactivity, and analysis methods.
Advanced classes in the Chemistry Department include full semester courses in the important chemical disciplines of Biochemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, and Physical Chemistry. In addition, students select from a rotating series of exciting Selected Topics electives to complete their personalized experience of their field.
The Chemistry BS and BA majors complete their degrees through the department seminar and the Senior Thesis experiences.
