Adding research to your summer

Summer is a great time to focus on learning in the lab. Our students use this valuable time on their research at IC as well as to gain experience in industry or at graduate schools.

Opportunities at Ithaca College

Students working outside

Not every lab can do their research outside, but the summer is always a great time to stay in Ithaca!

You can apply to the H&S Summer Scholars Program to be considered for a full-time, 8-10 week, paid position to do research on campus with faculty in the department. Applications are due in February of each year; in the application, you will rank the faculty member(s) you'd like to work with, discuss your academic and personal goals, and explain how this summer experience will help you fulfill those aspirations. Ideally, you should also speak with potential faculty research mentors to understand the specific research opportunities available in their lab. The department often has additional positions supported by generous alumni funds and grants. Students who apply to be a Summer Scholar with a chemistry faculty member will automatically be considered for these awards as appropriate.

Does research continue under quarantines?

Many of our students and faculty continued their research through the Summer of 2020!

Opportunities Elsewhere

Students often use their summers to explore exciting research while getting a taste of graduate schools or industry! Look here to search widely for REU opportunities nationally. The department also gathers information on additional opportunities through our various professional networks and posts them in the department. Discuss your options with your research or major advisor early and get advice on where and when to apply.
