H&S Innovation Scholars Program

Want to hit the ground running and apply your education to real-world problems starting on day one? The School of Humanities & Sciences offers motivated students a unique way to explore their sense of purpose and belonging by integrating classroom learning with service engagement and community organizations, in a sequence of courses and projects throughout their first 3 semesters at IC. Every applicant to H&S is invited to apply.

Innovation Scholars will offer three topics in fall 2023:

You might be wondering...

  • Can I participate in Innovation Scholars and still fulfill the requirements for my major? Yes! In fact, many of the Innovation Scholars courses may also count toward Integrative Core Curriculum (ICC) and/or your major or minor requirements.
  • Does my topic need to relate to my major? No, although Innovation Scholars is only available to H&S students.
  • Can I choose my topic? The Innovation Scholars application will ask you to indicate which topics you are interested in. The program committee will do their best to place accepted applicants into one of their desired topics.
  • What is the deadline to apply? The application deadline is March 1, 2023.
  • When will I be notified if I am selected as an Innovation Scholar? Acceptance notifications will be sent in April 2023.
  • How many students are accepted? The program can accommodate 45 students total (15 per topic).
  • What will my first 3 semesters at IC look like if I'm selected as an Innovation Scholar?
    • Semester 1: Your First-Year Seminar (required of all first-year students) will be one designed for your assigned topic and will be taught by a professor in the program.
    • Semester 2: Continue with another course in the same topic but with a different professor.
    • Semester 3: Participate in a Community Engagement Capstone class with the entire Innovation Scholars group (students in all three topics), and develop and implement a service project with a community partner.
