Exception 5: Pets

In general, pets are not permitted inside any college building or on college grounds.

Limited exceptions are made in college housing:

  • Fish are allowed but fish tanks must be ten (10) gallons or less. Fish must be taken home during college breaks because electric appliances must be unplugged during these periods.
  • Community/Residence Directors may be allowed a pet in their assigned living space according to their lease and contract. They are fully responsible for the care, cleaning, and control of the animal, as well as financially liable for any damages.

Allowances for special events or circumstances

Outside of College-owned buildings and certain controlled spaces, well-behaved and appropriately leashed or harnessed pets of IC community members may enjoy exterior walking spaces. In these circumstances:

  • Pets may not be left alone and must be under the control of a handler at all times.
  • Pets are not permitted on athletic fields, in garden areas, or to swim or wade in campus ponds.
  • The handler must have the necessary means to immediately remove and dispose of any waste left by the pet.
  • The handler is responsible for any damage to the college grounds or property (including any digging damage).
  • Pets may not be taken to areas where special events are being held in outdoor spaces (e.g., IC Kicks Back).
