Dr. Vielkind's current project examines the history of artistic “experimentation” within avant-garde film during the postwar period. He identifies conceptual similarities between aesthetic and laboratory practices, particularly through the creative uses of lyrical cinematography, hand painting, computer algorithms, and mathematics in cinema. Dr. Vielkind also researches the visual cultural of the 1960s space race, particularly investigating how various media, such as television news broadcasts, photojournalism, modern art, documentaries, and the science fiction film genre, have inspired critiques about the geopolitics of spaceflight.
Dr. Vielkind was also a research fellow in the Department of Photography at the Museum of Modern Art, where he assisted with planning the 2022 exhibition Wolfgang Tillmans: To look without fear.
