About Me

I am an ecologist; my current research is focused on applied conservation in wetland ecosystems, mostly with plants. In my past life, I was a high school environmental science and biology teacher, and a seasonal naturalist for various regional and national parks. I also worked as a research technician studying grassland and forest songbird communities, and granivorous soil invertebrates in ag fields.

I am passionate about natural history, education, and conservation, and particularly love when those things can be combined. When I'm not teaching or figuring out why my R code isn't working, I love to hike, kayak, and bird with my husband and rescue mutt, cultivate native plants, and find new cooking adventures.

Teaching

I have been teaching for nearly 20 years in roles ranging from high school science teacher to national park ranger to college professor. In addition to the courses I teach here at Ithaca College, I also occasionally contribute to field courses at SUNY ESF's Cranberry Lake Biological Station in the Adirondacks and at National Audubon Society's Hog Island Camp in midcoast Maine.

Fall 2025 Courses:

  • ENVS 292:  Critical Skills in Environmental Research and Practice ("CritSki")
  • ENVS 110:  The Environmental Crisis: Causes and Solutions

Spring 2026 Courses:

  • ENVS 119:  Introductory Environmental Seminar
  • ENVS 325:  Wetland Ecology and Conservation (an intensive with ENVS 340: Topics in Pollution)

Research

My research uses ecological data to address conservation issues, most recently in wetlands. My lab here at IC is currently focused the ecology of canopy gaps in forested wetlands, developing long-term monitoring protocol for wetlands after conservation action (e.g., restoration or management), and mapping and monitoring the wetlands on the Ithaca College Natural Lands.
