Kari Smoker brings a unique combination of academic expertise and professional experience to Ithaca College and to the greater Ithaca community. Earlier in her career, she worked as an associate in the Tax & Business Advisory Group at Arthur Andersen and then went on to practicing law in Rochester, NY. She is passionate about connecting what students learn in the classroom to real-world challenges, and her teaching and scholarship have focused on areas including taxation, sports tax, accounting, forensic accounting and fraud law, and the legal environment of business. She co-authors the McGraw Hill text, Law, Business, & Society , and has received several awards, including the Rochester Business Journal’s Forty Under 40 Award and the State University of New York Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. She has also served as a consultant for AFP Consulting LLC, specializing in tax issues for professional athletes, and has been interviewed by various media outlets on contemporary tax issues affecting the sports industry. One of the experiences she enjoys most, however, is serving as the Site Manager for the Ithaca College Tax Clinic, a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program run in partnership with the IRS. She also serves as Treasurer for the Greater Ithaca Activities Center, Inc., the nonprofit arm of the City of Ithaca.
