Marty Sternstein, Professor Emeritus, taught at Ithaca College from 1970, except for one year as Visiting Professor and Head of the Math Dept at the College of the Virgin Islands, St. Croix, and two years as Fulbright Professor and Math Dept Chair at the University of Liberia, Monrovia, Liberia. At Ithaca College he was Math Dept Chair for six years, received three Dana Teaching Awards, and was honored with the Ithaca College Excellence in Teaching Award. He developed new curricula including "Power Algebra" and "Dynamic Functions" (with Yurekli and Novak), "Math in Africa", and the first U.S. course for college credit in chess theory (with S. Schwartz). He is the only mathematician to give a presentation at the annual Conference on African Linguistics. His most recent publication is the Barron's Educational Series: AP Statistics.
Marty has strong interests in national educational and social issues concerning equal access to math education for all. This has led to activities such as directing our TEAM program, leading the math side of the IC/FDA partnership, and continuing participation and leadership in relevant workshops and conferences.
Marty met his wife, Faith, in Liberia, West Africa, and after coming to the U.S., she attended Ithaca College, receiving a degree in anthropology with a minor in gerontology. Their older son, Jon, a cross-country runner, graduated from SUNY Geneseo with a degree in Computer Science, and currently heads his own computer security firm in Raleigh, NC. Their younger son, Jeremy, graduated from Western New England College, where he played on the varsity basketball team. He is currently working in Marietta, GA. Faith and Marty live on Muzzy Road in a house they designed and built with their own hands with the help of many of the math faculty. They have four delightful grandchildren.
