Desmond Maggione is a freshman film major from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His work shines a light on untold stories and issues plaguing the modern world, while guiding viewers toward a better future. He previously interned at media organizations such as WHYY and All Ages Productions. Through these internships and associated projects, he’s found purpose and passion in socially responsible mediamaking. This purpose is made clear through the various documentary pieces he has made, highlighting pressing social issues and innovative non-profits. These, among other productions, have earned him prestigious awards from the CSPAN StudentCam Documentary Competition, WHYY Youth Media Awards, and NFL Films High School Film Festival. Among other service this year, he will be spending his time volunteering weekly at McGraw House, helping the elderly with their tech questions. Desmond plans to spend his freshman year trying out as much as he can on campus to better understand his passions and future plans. He’s already begun getting involved with The Ithacan as a part of the newspaper’s Photo, Life & Culture, and Opinion sections. His hopes for the remaining school year are to get more involved with clubs like NYFTSA, ICTV, and DKA while gaining the hands-on experience and knowledge to carve out his place on campus. Desmond is so proud and honored to be given the unique opportunity to be a Park Scholar. He can’t wait to combine his previous skills and everything he’s going to learn at Ithaca College to create media that truly speaks to people and has a positive, tangible effect on the communities surrounding IC.
